The Wedding

September 10. This was the day we had all waited for! On that crisp morning in front of the Stadhuis, or city hall of Naarden, Stephanie and Thijs arrived in regal style in a vintage Cadillac.

Everyone filed into the hall where the magistrate who performed the civil ceremony greeted us, and told a little bit about the bruidspaar and how they had met. Stephanie and Thijs had spotted each other at a water polo match in which Thijs was playing, and they had met thereafter, and fell quickly in love.

Following the official civil marriage, we all walked down a few doors to the Little St. Vitus' Church of Naarden, where a Christian ceremony took place. It was a rather traditional Roman Catholic service, with a lot more Latin than one would expect in an American church.

It was truly a beautiful wedding.

Ted was feeling kind of lousy, so he went back to the hotel, but I rode on to the next stop on the bridal agenda with new friends Lollicke and Ronald. The venue was a sailboat, which we boarded and enjoyed an hour or so of cruising, until we went back into dock and picked up the newlyweds, who had remained behind for some photos.
